An X - ray study of the dipping low mass X - ray binary XB 1323 − 619

چکیده
During a BeppoSAX observation of the lowmass X-ray binary dip source XB1323−619 a total of 10 type I X-ray bursts and parts of 12 intensity dips were observed. During non-bursting, non-dipping intervals, the 1.0–150 keV BeppoSAX spectrum can be modelled by a cutoff power-law with a photon index of 1.48± 0.01, a cutoff energy of 44.1 −4.4 keV together with a blackbody with kT of 1.77± 0.25 keV contributing ∼15% of the 2 – 10 keV flux. Absorption equivalent to 3.88± 0.16× 10 atom cm is required. The dips repeat with a period of 2.938 ± 0.020 hr and span 40% of the orbital cycle. During dips the maximum reduction in 2– 10 keV intensity is ∼65%. The spectral changes during dips are complex and cannot be modelled by a simple absorber because of the clear presence of part of the nondip spectrum which is not absorbed. Spectral evolution in dipping can be well modelled by progressive covering of the cutoff power-law component which must be extended, plus rapid absorption of the point-source blackbody. One of the bursts is double and 4 of the bursts occurred during dipping intervals. These bursts have 2–10 keV peak count rates reduced by only 22% on average from those occurring outside the dips, and are not heavily absorbed. One explanation for this lack of absorption is that the bursts temporarily ionize the absorbing material responsible for the dips.

A study of the spectral evolution during dipping in XB 1323–619 with Rossi-XTE and BeppoSAX
We report results from analysis of the observations of the dipping low mass X-ray binary XB 1323−619 made with BeppoSAX and Rossi-XTE. The dust-scattered halo contributes significantly in this source, and the observation made with BeppoSAX on 1997 August was used to provide MECS radial intensity profiles at several energies. From these, the halo fractions were obtained and thus an optical depth...
متن کاملNeutral absorber dips in the periodic burster LMXB XB 1323 - 619 from Suzaku
We present results of an observation with Suzaku of the dipping, periodic bursting low mass X-ray binary XB 1323-619. Using the energy band 0.8-70 keV, we show that the source spectrum is well-described as the emission of an extended accretion disk corona, plus a small contribution of blackbody emission from the neutron star. The dip spectrum is well-fitted by the progressive covering model in ...

We have discovered a ∼1 Hz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in the persistent-emission, the dips, and the type I X-ray bursts of the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1323–62. The rms amplitude of the QPO is approximately 9%, only weakly depending on photon energy. The amplitude is consistent with being constant throughout the persistent-emission, the dips and the bursts in all but one observation, wher...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

We report results of analysis of the ASCA observation of the Low Mass X-ray Binary dipping source XB 1916-053 made on 1993, May 2nd, during which dipping was very deep such that in the deepest parts of dips, the X-ray intensity in the band 0.5-12.0 keV fell to zero, demonstrating that all emission components were completely removed. The best-fit orbital period of the binary system determined fr...
